The Architecture of a Shakespearean Narrative
To bring their vision to life, the owners collaborated with creative director Autumn Hachey and interior designer Jillian Smith-Moher. Together, the design team stripped away decades of uninspired past renovations to restore character back into the building’s bones.
Instead of a traditional grand lobby, Hotel Julie functions as a collection of nine entirely self-contained flats, accessed via keyless digital entry pads. This structure shifts the design focus entirely to the individual rooms, allowing each flat to tell its own visual story. Throughout the property, heritage paint colours, unlacquered brass fixtures, and classic black-and-white checkerboard tile floors pay homage to the British roots of Stratford-upon-Avon.

Subtle theatrical nods are woven throughout the architecture. Valances and heavy velvet drapery mirror the rich textures of theatre curtains, while custom light fixtures subtly mimic the shape of ruffed Elizabethan collars. Even the artisan soaps are embossed with the hotel’s hand-sketched burning heart logo—a quiet tribute to the playwright’s legendary romantic tragedies.

Each of the nine flats features a completely unique layout and colour palette, ranging from moody aubergine to jewel-box gold. Flat 4, nicknamed the “Serpent Suite,” serves as a prime example of the property’s bold approach to texture.

Inside this deep green haven, a custom keyhole-shaped doorway and plush theatre drapes separate the living spaces. The furniture choices are intentionally tactile, featuring custom club chairs clad in a raised serpentine pattern. In the centre of the room, a striking red marble coffee table sits contrasted against a rounded, taupe velvet couch and deep green armchairs—a bold pop of colour that grounds the room’s rich, dramatic undertones.
The Practical Side of a Self-Contained Stay
Because Hotel Julie operates without a front desk or an on-site restaurant, the accommodation functions more like a high-end apartment than a conventional hotel. Each flat is equipped with a full kitchen or a well-appointed kitchenette, stocked with quality cookware, French presses, and locally roasted coffee courtesy of Stratford’s To Bean or Not to Bean.
