At boldtraveller, we believe intentional travel means staying somewhere that connects you to a place’s soul – its history, its art, its people. La Divina delivers exactly that, turning a night’s stay into a pilgrimage through Greek operatic heritage.
La Divina, Athens, Greece: A Historic Address Honours Greece’s Legendary Soprano, Maria Callas
I’ve wandered the cobblestone lanes of old Athens countless times, never noticing this bespoke two-storey structure in the Thiseio neighbourhood. But this time was different. Tucked behind Adrianou Street’s vibrant restaurant row, one of the oldest and most storied neoclassical buildings in the city has undergone a long over due and much deserved renaissance.
Its transformation is La Divina, a beautiful boutique hotel that honours the life and legacy of Maria Callas, Greece’s celebrated soprano. And, much like the daring diva herself, its siren song serenades visitors with a sense of timeless elegance. For the intentional traveller, this is more than a place to sleep – it’s a living museum of Greek culture and artistic triumph.
A Centrally Located Oasis in Thiseio, Athens

The view from La Divina hotel in Athens, Greece, looking toward the Acropolis. Housed in a historic neoclassical building originally built in 1897, this boutique hotel is inspired by opera diva Maria Callas and was once home to the Athenaeum Conservatory.
La Divina’s central location brings history to my doorstep, while offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle that surrounds me. Many of the city’s most acclaimed attractions are a short stroll away, including the Temple of Hephaestus, ancient Athenian Agora, Athens Observatory, pulsating Plaka neighbourhood and Monastiraki markets. But from my bedroom window, overlooking the tree-lined courtyard, the only sounds I hear are coming from within. I pull the curtains and with the slightest tilt of my head, catch a glimpse of the fabled, proudly perched Parthenon. My heart skips, words dissolve and with wide-eyed awe, I witness the morning light cascade across its ancient marble, bathing it in crimson, fuschia and orange.
An Interesting Past: From Family Home to Zipper Factory
The history of the building La Divina is currently housed in dates back to 1897, and it’s a rich one. Once the residence of the Karavasili family, it was later purchased by the Kampas family, who were known around town to host lavish parties. In the early 1920s, this prestigious address was abandoned; by the Second World War it was repurposed as an Italian barracks; by the end of the war, it was a shelter for transients. In the ’50s, it housed a zipper factory until it was abandoned again in the mid-80s. By the ’90s, the ground floor was repurposed into a fine-dining restaurant, while the Athenaeum International Art Center leased the building, and transformed it into a Conservatory, adding two concert halls, a film and music library and classrooms aimed at elevating Greek musical education. Recitals and performances also took centre stage, including the internationally renowned Grand Prix Maria Callas competition, in honour of the diva herself.
Who Was Maria Callas, Anyway?

Born in New York City in 1923, Maria Callas was raised by immigrant Greek parents. Wanting a son, her mother was considered to be especially overbearing and neglectful. Callas studied at the Athens Conservatory and, by 13, she was already a rising star, becoming increasingly famous for her resounding range, technical astuteness and emotional depth. Besides her public relationship with Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis, Callas’ lauded performances in Norma, La Traviata and Tosca cemented her legacy as one of the 20th century’s most acclaimed operatic voices and a source of Greek national pride both locally and abroad.
La Divina: A Boutique Gem That Embodies Intentional Travel
Opened in April 2024, the former Odeon Athenaeum dedicated to Callas is now home to La Divina, a stunning, 12-suite boutique hotel that honours both the performer and her legacy. It was also named one of Time magazine’s World’s Greatest Places to Stay in 2025. I climb the grand, marble steps and pass through striking blue front doors into a lobby where soaring ceilings compliment marble floors, exposed original stone walls, intricate classical plasterwork and abundant natural light.

I’m intoxicated by the sweet scent of vanilla tobacco that permeates the space, and enthralled that the suites at La Divina are all named after famous classic songs and operas performed by Callas, including La Boheme, La Vestale and Ave Maria. Some offer views of Adrianou Street and the distant Observatory, while others face the courtyard and the Acropolis. Select suites include a private jacuzzi and balcony with Parthenon views. Exhausted after a full day of exploring the city, I can’t wait to take a waterfall-style shower, slip into my cozy bathrobe and slippers and pamper myself with the complimentary Olive Era amenities. After all, when in Greece, do as the Greeks do, and infuse your skin with olive oil and a medley of natural Greek extracts. After waking up refreshed, I head to the courtyard for a quintessential Greek breakfast. Pro tip: order the ‘Kayanas’ – perfectly seasoned scrambled eggs with feta and tomato, served on a freshly-made, toasted bun.
